Every piece we have brought out of the ground, listed with the data we actually have. We are prospectors, not gemologists — so where a measurement is pending it says so, and where an identification is provisional it says that too. Certificate records are designed to be updatable onchain as lab work and readings come in, so a correction is a recorded revision rather than a quiet edit.

Hardness and specific gravity are the two cheapest real tests and both need practice on known material first. Specific gravity separates species that look alike — quartz sits near 2.65 while uraninite runs 7.5–10, so the same-sized piece weighing three times as much is the giveaway that no photo can give you. Values are standard mineralogical ranges, not measurements of our pieces.
SiO₂ · H 7. Gray to near-black translucent quartz. The colour comes from natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium inside the crystal — it is not radioactive, and it is not a coating. Look for glassy lustre, conchoidal fracture, and a crystal face at a shallow angle to the prism. Our most common find, usually sitting in feldspar matrix.
Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ · H 7.5–8. Hexagonal prisms, harder than quartz — it will scratch a window, quartz will not. Aquamarine is the blue-iron variety, morganite the pink-manganese one, heliodor the yellow. Weight for weight the most valuable material we handle, which is why any beryl-class piece gets listed as premium rather than bulk.
KAl₂(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂ · H 2.5–3. Unmistakable once handled: near-perfect basal cleavage, comes apart in thin flexible transparent sheets, and a fingernail will mark it. Books of mica are common in the same matrix as the quartz — we usually leave them attached, because the contrast is what makes a matrix piece look like a matrix piece.
Complex borosilicate · H 7–7.5. Black striated prisms, triangular cross-section with rounded edges (the giveaway versus a black oxide). Very common to find as thin needles running through quartz and feldspar. We do not call a tourmaline variety without a clearer read than a photo gives us.
Identified by response, not by name. We record these by how they behave under a lamp — coverage percentage and colour under shortwave — because that is what we can actually measure. Green shortwave response often points at uranium-bearing secondaries, but identifying a specific species (uraninite, autunite, torbernite) takes lab confirmation we do not have yet. Until then it stays UV-fluorescent, and it is priced on coverage rather than weight.
A Geiger counter gives you counts per minute, not a verdict. Working rules we use: never inhale dust, wash hands after handling, keep pieces in a closed labelled container rather than a living space, and do not break or grind anything that reads elevated. Shipping is US-only for physical pieces and follows USPS Publication 52 / DOT 49 CFR §173.421 (UN2910 limited quantity — under 0.5 mrem/hr at the surface). Anything above those limits does not ship.
Provisional and experimental: identifications are made by a prospector in the field and are expected to change as measurements accumulate. Mineral collecting involves real physical risk, and radioactive material requires care and, above certain limits, does not ship at all. Nothing here is financial advice or a promise of resale value.
