What we look for, and where the old dumps are

Every locality named here is a HISTORIC, publicly documented pegmatite locality — the kind that appears in state geological survey reports, mindat, and published field guides. Naming them is not a secret; generations of collectors have written about them. What this page deliberately does NOT contain is any active or private working ground. Where we are digging right now is not published, and neither is anything that would put a landowner, a family member, or a permission in a stranger's hands.

Access status is NOT stated for any locality below, and that is on purpose: it changes constantly and it is frequently private, leased, posted, or flooded. Every one of these requires the landowner's permission or a state permit before you put a tool in the ground. Reading this page is not permission to dig.

🔍 What we look for

The old dump and tailings piles

This is the single highest-yield ground in the Northeast, and the reason is historical rather than geological. The commercial pegmatite mines of the late 1800s and early 1900s worked for sheet mica, feldspar for ceramics, and beryl for beryllium. Anything that was not one of those three was WASTE, and it went on the dump. That means the dumps were built out of exactly the material a specimen collector wants: quartz crystals, gem tourmaline, beryl in crystal form, garnet, apatite, columbite, and the uranium minerals nobody wanted to handle.

What we do: Work the loose material at the base and edges of a dump first, where weathering has freed crystals from matrix. Look for fresh colour in broken rock — a dull grey dump face hiding a pocket of gemmy material is the classic find.

Pocket (vug) zones in the core margin

Gem-bearing pockets in a pegmatite sit in the core margin zone — the boundary running between the quartz core and the blocky feldspar. That is where the late-stage fluids concentrated the elements that make beryl, tourmaline and apatite. Knowing which zone you are standing in tells you whether to keep digging or move.

What we do: Read the wall: coarse blocky feldspar with book mica is the intermediate zone; approaching glassy grey quartz means you are near the core. The contact between them is the target.

Pegmatite against wall rock

Where a pegmatite meets the surrounding schist or gneiss, the chemistry changes abruptly and unusual species form — phosphates, rare oxides, and the uranium minerals. Palermo and Ruggles are both famous for exactly this kind of contact mineralogy.

What we do: Walk the contact line and look for colour changes, staining, and crusts that do not match the bulk rock. Secondary uranium minerals show as bright yellow-green coatings.

Books of mica

Mica was the commercial prize, so big books were taken and the smaller ones left. Books are also the most fragile thing we handle — they cleave into sheets under almost no load, which is why mica ships in a rigid immobilised box and never a padded envelope.

What we do: Photograph books in place before moving them. Note the book size and whether the sheets are clear, stained, or intergrown with something else.

Quartz — massive, smoky, and crystal

The most common thing in these dumps and the backbone of what we catalogue. Smoky quartz is the signature of the northeast pegmatites. It is heavy, which is why 'heavy' appears as a shipping fact and not a complaint: dense rock is what flat-rate postage is cheapest for.

What we do: Weigh everything. A quartz piece is catalogued by real grams, and a pool of many small pieces is never minted or shipped as one certificate.

UV-fluorescent material

A large share of what we pull fluoresces green under shortwave UV. Fluorescence is the honest, measurable property we catalogue — it is a real observation with a recorded response, unlike a species name, which needs lab work to be more than a guess.

What we do: Record WHICH wavelength produced the response — shortwave (254 nm) and longwave (365 nm) do not behave the same, and a reading without the wavelength is not a reading.

💡 Why old dumps are the target

The northeast pegmatites were worked commercially for three things: sheet mica for electrical insulation, feldspar for ceramics, and beryl for beryllium. Everything else was waste. The dumps were built out of the discarded remainder — which is to say, out of quartz crystals, gem tourmaline, garnet, apatite, columbite, and the uranium minerals nobody wanted to touch. The industry spent fifty years hand-sorting the good mineralogy into piles for us.

Maine

Oxford County and the western pegmatite belt

The richest gem pegmatite district in the eastern United States. Tourmaline was first found here in the 1820s and the district has been worked in waves ever since.

New Hampshire

The western and central pegmatite districts

New Hampshire pegmatites are the ones that made uranium-bearing species a known local hazard rather than a theoretical one.

The Middletown and Portland pegmatite district

Small district with an outsized species list, worked hard in the late 1800s and largely idle since.

☢️ Radioactive material is its own class

Several Northeast pegmatites — Ruggles among them — carry uranium-bearing species. Some pieces from these dumps read hot on a Geiger counter and fluoresce green under UV. We treat that material as its own handling class: held back from physical shipping until the reading is recorded and the shielding question is answered.

📦 How hand-dug rock actually ships

70 lbthe hard USPS ceiling per package. Not 75 — 70 is the figure that decides whether a box is accepted at the counter. Above it, a shipment becomes two or more tracked boxes, and we say so before anything is paid.
÷ 139dimensional weight: L × W × H ÷ 139. USPS bills the GREATER of scale weight and box size, so only pad a box as much as the rock actually needs.
Flat Rateone price for anything up to 70 lb that fits the box, anywhere in the US. Dense rock is exactly the cargo this is cheapest for — a 60 lb quartz box and a 2 lb box cost the same.

The tiers, in the order we try them

  • Priority Mail Flat Rate · Fits the box, any weight up to 70 lb
    One price regardless of weight, anywhere in the US. For dense rock this is almost always the cheapest option — a 60 lb quartz box and a 2 lb box cost the same. This is the default for heavy material.
  • Priority Mail (by weight and zone) · Does not fit a flat-rate box, or is light and travelling a short zone
    Priced on weight and distance. Beats flat rate for light, close shipments; loses badly on heavy ones. Dimensional weight applies, so pad the box only as much as the rock needs.
  • Ground Advantage · Weight is high and time is not critical
    Slower, generally cheaper by weight, same 70 lb ceiling. Use when the holder is not waiting on it.
  • First-Class / padded envelope · A single small, tough piece under about a pound
    A 5 g UV-fluorescent thumbnail or a small gem rough travels fine in a padded envelope. Never for mica books, friable material or anything crystalline and brittle.

What we actually have, and how it travels

Bulk quartz and heavy rock

Packing: Single-wall box, corner padding, weight declared accurately

Heavy and cheap per pound. This is the cargo flat-rate pricing is best for. Weighed on a scale before it is packed, and the weight travels with the certificate.

Mica books and friable specimens

Packing: Rigid box, piece immobilised, no loose movement at all

Mica cleaves into sheets under almost no load. A mica book that shifts in transit arrives as a pile of sheets.

UV-fluorescent pieces

Packing: Rigid box, wrapped, with the fluorescence response noted on the label

Gem rough and cut stones (opal, beryl)

Packing: Parcel within a parcel, sealed, contents not described on the outside

These are priced per carat, not per gram, and a single 16 ct opal can be worth more than every box of quartz on the same pallet. Value band decides handling, never weight.

Large granite and oversized pieces

Packing: Split across multiple boxes if over 70 lb

There is no single-package option above 70 lb. A large piece becomes two or more tracked boxes, and the holder is told that up front rather than after payment.

No dollar figure appears on this page on purpose. USPS rates change and vary by zone, so any price printed here would be wrong within weeks. The real number is quoted live against a real ZIP when a holder makes a claim — this page tells you the rules, the quote tells you the cost.

🔒 What we do not publish

  • Where we are actively digging. A one-person operation's working ground is not a public resource, and publishing it invites both claim-jumping and liability.
  • Landowner names, family connections, or any permission we hold.
  • Anything that would let a reader arrive at a specific private parcel rather than a documented public locality.

A locality name is not a promise of a find

These are the districts we know and the ground types we work. Knowing that Mount Mica produced gem tourmaline tells you the geology is right — it does not tell you that anything is left in a given dump after a century of collectors. Every trip is a gamble on ground that has been picked over, and the honest expectation for a day in old tailings is mostly quartz and mica with an occasional real surprise.
